ERROR: SQL Server Logon WMI Provider error. Cannot find object or property or FallBack certificate initialization failed with error code: 1

Summary

Normally, the Add2Exchange SQL Server instance does not require a certificate for operation. However, some customer environments may enforce the requirement for security via policies. In this case, SQL Server needs a certificate issued on the computer. This article discusses how to enable such a certificate.

Symptom

This issue arises when the installation attempts to change the service logon of the SQL Server to be the Add2Exchange service account. The Add2Exchange Console attempts to open and complains that the SQL Server needs to be started, even if the service is started under other credentials.

When looking in the Event Viewer Application log, the SQL Service logs a FallBack certificate initialization failed with error code: 1. error message.

Attempting to change the service logon for the SQL Server instance to the Add2Exchange service account results in a WMI Provider error. Cannot find object or property. dialog.

The Add2Exchange Service is unable to synchronize in this situation.

Resolution

Add a computer certificate for SQL Server to use by following the directions in the Install a certificate on a server with Microsoft Management Console (MMC) of the article at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316898

Next assign the certificate to the instance.

*Note* More details on how such certificates are used by SQL Server are discussed in the article at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318605
