Moving the Add2Exchange Installation

If you are preparing to migrate Add2Exchange to a new server, here are the steps to manually make this process easier.

This process can be done MUCH easier if you license the Add2Exchange Toolkit and Recovery and Migration Manager tools, but some have asked if it can be done manually. The move process can be done manually, but the Recovery tool must be licensed.

If you are preparing to migrate Add2Exchange to a new server here are the manual steps to make this process easy. The easiest way to move Add2Exchange is to license the Add2Exchange Toolbox. *Note*
These instructions refer to the Add2Exchange service account as “zAdd2Exchange” since that is the recommended account name. This makes it possible to cut and paste many examples. If your service account name differs, substitute it instead.

Preparation of the Old Server

These procedures require the A2EDiags tools, included in the latest versions of the Add2Exchange installation package. It may also be downloaded from:

The A2EDiags package is a self-extracting executable. Extract it then run the A2EDiags.bat from the extracted subdirectory.

  1. If the new server is Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010, make sure the new Level 2 procedures have been done with an account with permissions to grant access to the Exchange 2007 & 2010 server. There are additional permissions that must be complete in order to install
  2. Upgrade to the latest version of Add2Exchange using the full package from www.diditbetter.com
    • This will help ensure compatibility with new installation regardless of if within Software Maintenance period
  3. Open the Add2Exchange Console to apply changes
  4. Close the Add2Exchange Console without starting the service
  5. Export from the registry HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OPEN DOOR SOFTWARE\ADD2EXCHANGE\Profile 1 as profile1.reg
  6. Using the A2EDiags program, utilize the Detach the Add2Exchange Database tool to successfully detach the database
  7. Make a backup of the profile1.reg file and the a2e.mdf file
    • a2e.mdf is in Program Files\Open Door Software\Add2Exchange\Database
  8. Copy both files to the new server
  9. Disable the Add2Exchange service on the old computer
  10. Disable the A2ESQLServer service on the old computer

We are done with old server. Do not format until a successful server move is complete. If possible, you can now dismount the Public folder and Mailbox stores or simply stop the Exchange Services on the original Exchange Server.

Preparation of New Server

  1. Make sure Microsoft updates have been run on the new server and verify that it is completely up to date and the server has been rebooted
  2. If the server is Windows Server 2008 or newer, you must disable User Account Control and reboot. Start run MSCONFIG, Tools, UAC, disable
  3. Copy or Download the same full version of Add2Exchange to a new c:\zlibrary\a2esetups folder on the new server.
  4. If the new server is Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010, the Level 2 procedures have been done as an account with permissions to grant access With Exchange 2007 & 2010 there are additional permissions that must be complete in order to install
  5. Log on as zAdd2Exchange
  6. Install Add2Exchange according to the installation guide
  7. Open the console
    • SQL 2005 will automatically install
  8. Close the Add2Exchange Console and if prompted, do not start the Add2Exchange Service.

If SQL 2005 errors saying that it is not started, manually start the A2ESQLServer service from the Services Administrative Tool and reopen the console.

Import data from the Old Server to the New Server

  1. Run the A2EDiags
  2. Detach the Add2Exchange database with the Detach Database option
  3. Go to Program Files\Open Door Software\Add2Exchange\Database
  4. Rename the file a2e.mdb to a2e_original.mdb
  5. Move the file to another folder, such as C:\zlibrary
  6. Move the a2e.mdb file from the old server to Program Files\Open Door Software\Add2Exchange\Database
  7. If the new server is a 64-bit server, and the old one was 32-bit, then the registry file needs to be converted to 64-bit
    1. Run the A2EDiag to convert a registry file to 64-bit
    2. Choose the profile1.reg file
  8. Double-click the profile1.reg file to import it
    • Use the converted file if you had to convert to 64-bit, otherwise use the original.
  9. From Services Administrative Tool, start the A2ESQLServer service
  10. Attach the database using A2EDiags
  11. Run regedit.
  12. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OpenDoor Software®\Add2Exchange\Profile 1
    • On 64-bit systems, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\OpenDoor Software®\Add2Exchange\Profile 1
  13. Find the value named License Address
  14. Double-click to edit the value
  15. Clear the value and save
  16. Close regedit
  17. Open the console

Completion

  1. Upon loading the Add2Exchange Console and after importing the data from the old server, the program will prompt to create a new profile. Click yes.
  2. All relationships will be in alert, you will be required to license your installation before continuing. (A $50 per key license transfer fee is required. NOTE: A license transfer is only available to licensed end users who have valid software assurance in place. If your software assurance has expired, then a current version upgrade license is required before transferring the software to a new replacement server.)
  3. Once licensed, Relationships may appear normal or still may be in alert.
  4. If possible, dismount the stores or stop Exchange Services on the original Exchange Server.
  5. Open the A2EDiags program and select the option to put all relationships in alert.
  6. Tip: Be Careful and go slow on this next step! Using Recovery and Migration Manager, slowly and carefully select the source and destination and pivot folders of all relationships. Do not double click to open up a folder child objects, use the plus next to it. A double click is seen as select or ok.
  7. Continue the process until all relationships are reselected. Close the RMM tool.
  8. Open the Add2Exchange Console
    • The relationships may still be in alert. If so:
    1. Select Services > Utility
    2. Select Start and Stop Logging
  9. Start the Add2Exchange service
  10. Monitor the Add2Exchange Event log for Success Audits
